Waccamaw volleyball falls in Lower State final

For the sixth straight year, Waccamaw High's volleyball team lost to Bishop England in the Lower State final.

The Bishops set the tone for the night by scoring the first five points in the first game of the match.

Bishop England's offense was relentless, scoring in bunches, while Waccamaw couldn't score more than one or two points at a time.

After cutting the lead to 7-3, Waccamaw trailed by nine or 10 points for most of the match, and eventually lost 25-18.

Bishop England got off to a quick start in game two, building a 4-0 lead, before Waccamaw rallied to cut it to 5-2.

The Bishops then went on a run to extend the lead to 13-5, but Ora Parker Eddy served the Warriors to within 13-8.

That was as close as Waccamaw would get. The Bishops held off the Warriors down the stretch for the 25-13 win.

Waccamaw scored the first point of game three to hold its only lead of the match. Bishop England scored the next four points en route to a 25-11 victory and a chance at a 13th straight Class AA state title.

"I'm disappointed because I knew we could have beat them but I'm happy to be a part of such as great team," said senior Melaina Moore.

"We played our hardest and it was just good to see everyone work hard until the end," said senior Ainsleigh Boothe.

The Warriors finished the season 20-6.
Waccamaw only losses came to Bishop England,  James Island and North Myrtle Beach in Class AAA, and Carolina Forest and Wando in Class AAAA.
“We had a great season,” said Waccamaw coach Jill Schoen. “I couldn’t have asked for a better season.”
Moore finished the season with 208 kills.
Foster led the team in serving, successfully putting 96 percent of her more than 300 serves in play. She also had 98 kills.
Next up for Schoen and Moore is the North-South All-Star game. Moore will be joined on the South squad by Carvers Bay’s Savanna Powers.
