Erin Spatz: Good News Club must be amazing

Published Sunday, February 12, 2012 7:39 PM

On Thursdays after school, my kids get to go to the Good News Club. Good News Club is an after school program that happens once a week to teach and encourage kids about Jesus. My kids love it, and look forward to going each week. Once Good News club is over, they get to go to Eric’s office. Thursday is one of their favorite days. Occasionally, Eric will have a board meeting, which means that the kids cannot go to Good News Club or Eric’s office. Last week was one of those weeks.

I drove the kids to school that morning. I reminded all of them to take the bus home. I was clear, saying daddy had a meeting and would not be able to bring them home. I had them all repeat back to me what they were supposed to do. “Yes, mom, come home after school. No Good News Club.”

At 3:30, two of the three kids who are supposed to get off the bus arrive home. One is clearly missing. Autumn, the family reporter, bursts through the door and shouts, “Denver didn’t get on the bus!” At that exact moment, the phone rings, and guess who it is? Eric. I know you’re shocked. He tells me that Denver has just arrived at his office. And what’s even more annoying is, now I have to go and pick him up.

So, I load all the kids up and head down to Teach My People, trying to get there before Eric’s meeting. I walk in, and Denver announces he will not be leaving. He is mistaken. Eric picks him up and attempts to walk him out to the van, when Denver grabs the door frame of Eric’s office. I peel Denver’s fingers off, and we continue to walk out. Denver is not too happy, and is loudly sharing his unhappiness with everyone.

Once we get to the van and Eric gets the door open, Denver puts his feet on either side of the door in a defiant split. He is determined NOT to go home. Eric backs up and puts Denver in the van backwards, at which point Denver is just laying on the van floor. After giving Denver “the talk” about how he will now be going to bed extra early and will be grounded from all beloved toys, he climbs into his seat and pouts all the way home. Which is fine by me, since pouting is silent.

I am convinced he planned that whole thing. He wanted to go to Good News Club, and just thought  “I am going anyway!”  Keep up the good work Good News Club volunteers, because Good News Club must be amazing, since Denver was willing to risk his life to go.
