The agreement means the county will accept negotiated fees instead of taxes because the company is expanding its operations and creating jobs.
The company announced Dec. 14 that it is expanding its Georgetown production facility by 40,000 square feet, with a 130,000-square-foot asphalt storage yard, to accommodate new production equipment. The expansion will involve a $19.2 million investment and the creation of 49 jobs.
In January, Agru America purchased the assets of a production facility in Andrews, where the company has expanded its business to include production of needle-punched, non-woven textiles for environmental, industrial, automotive, bedding and furniture products. The $19.9 million investment is expected to create 77 new jobs.
In other business:
• County Council gave second reading to an ordinance amending the Woodside Village Planned Development in Murrells Inlet to allow the use of a LED or neon sign.
When the development, which includes the Piggly Wiggly store, was approved LED signs were not available.
Council member Jerry Oakley said it was a matter of fairness.
“They want what everybody up and down the highway has,” Oakley said. However, “I’m not going to be a champion of more signage on Highway 17.”
• Council also gave second reading to the following ordinances: an agreement with Horry County for a joint industrial and business park located in Horry County; the rezoning of 658 acres on Weehaw Plantation Road near Wedgefield Road from “one-half acre residential” and “conservation preservation” to “forest and agriculture”; an amendment to the Future Land Use Map for 2.82 acres on Kent Road from “commercial” to “industrial”; the rezoning of 8.2 acres on Kent Road from “general commercial” to “limited industrial”; and the amending of the boundaries of the Downtown Pawleys Planned Development to remove two parcels on the north corner and rezone to “general commercial.”
• Council approved spending $116,541.58 on 11 thermal imaging cameras for the Emergency Services Department.
Firefighters across Georgetown County tested cameras from five companies and unanimously chose the ISG Elite E380.
The cameras are funded through the county’s Capital Improvement Plan.
• The county will sign a municipal lease financing agreement with TD Equipment Financing of Columbia.
The agreement will cover vehicles and heavy equipment scheduled to be financed in the 2013 Capital Equipment Replacement Program, when the county expects to spend approximately $1.895 million.
The total that will be owed to TD Equipment is estimated at $1.997 million.
• The county will spend nearly $100,000 to purchase a closed door horizontal baler as part of the Capital Equipment Replacement Program.
The new machine will replace a K-Metal Fabrication vertical baler that the county acquired in 1995 and will be used to compact newspaper, office paper and cardboard as recycled materials.
The $99,745.74 bid was from Excel Manufacturing of St. Charles, Minn.
• Council approved a contract with Palmetto Corp. of Conway for concrete crushing services.
The county previously had a contract with Cox and Floyd Grading of Greer, but that company went out of business.
Palmetto will be paid $5.93 per ton and $1,200 per mobilization on an “as needed” basis.
• Council honored the winners of the annual holiday card contest. Nearly 400 entries were submitted.
A design by Hayli Carlson, a senior at Waccamaw High School, was picked to use on the county’s 2012 card.
The second place winner was Jerwyane Davis, a sophomore at Carvers Bay High School. The third-place winner was Alex Sanders, an eighth-grader at Waccamaw Middle School.
• Council gave permission to Murrells Inlet 2020 to replace aging flower boxes along the Marsh Walk and place new ones along the Jetty View walk when it is built next year.
Murrells Inlet 2020 has been maintaining flower boxes along the Marsh Walk since 2004. The group hopes to team up with local Boy Scouts to build new boxes.
